Indiana's May 6 primary election is less than a week away and although the spotlight is most heavily centered on the battle between presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, some candidates for state and federal offices will also be facing opposition.
One contest for the District 15 State Repr-esentative seat resulted in a recount in 2006 between incumbent Republican Don Lehe and Democrat Myron Sutton in the general election.
Lehe is opposed again this time around, both in the primary with contenders Lon Childress and Richard Niemeyer, and if he holds on until November, Lehe could be battling once again with Sutton if he wins the primary race against John Malan.
"I'm not worried about what happened with the recount in 2006," said Lehe when asked if it was on his mind.
"I always take every election seriously."
Lehe said he has been working hard for next week's election as well as taking care of his farm in the Brookston area.
"I've been working hard, doing a lot of door-to-door (campaigning) and telling people about the good things we've accomplished," Lehe said.
"There have been a lot of positive improvements in Indiana in conjunction with the Governor and I hope they will support that and me."
He also said there were a number of factual misstatements in the last election and he's seeing some of that already this time around.
One of those he noted concerned property tax issues associated with eliminating township assessors, particularly in the Lake County area.
"One part of the property tax issue has to do with township trustee assessors and eliminating that at certain levels depending on population," he said.
"I have supported township assessors all along, and I voted against that part - I didn't want to eliminate all of those at one time, so while I tried to save 28 of those, it was turned around to where I was hurting three."
Lehe said he has also been accused of not being pro-life, but in fact he is one of the strongest pro-life supporters in the campaign.
While he's not worried about facing Sutton again just yet, he added that, "If it turns out to be me and Sutton, we'll just work hard (to win)."...
